Local surface observations and webcams show areas of fog across far western NY in vicinity of Lake Erie this morning. Some of this fog may be locally dense, with visibilities down to a half mile or less at times. Fog is expected to dissipate by 9 AM this morning. If driving this morning, allow extra time to reach your destination and be prepared for rapid changes to visibility.

* Many people will be recreating outdoors on this Memorial Day, and people may underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the lower 50s on the lakes and around 50 on the rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
