Local surface observations and webcams show areas of fog across far western NY in vicinity of Lake Erie this morning. Some of this fog may be locally dense, with visibilities down to a half mile or less at times. Fog is expected to dissipate by 9 AM this morning. If driving this morning, allow extra time to reach your destination and be prepared for rapid changes to visibility.

* Many people will be recreating outdoors on this Memorial Day, and people may underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the lower 50s on the lakes and around 50 on the rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the Maine Warden Service, when the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and

* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Franklin County Beaches. * WHEN...Through late Thursday night. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

At 439 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Rowden, moving slowly south at 5 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and penny size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Rowden and Admiral. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

Dry conditions with relative humidity values between 20 and 30 percent will lead to near-critical fire weather conditions today. Southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts of 15 to 20 mph are forecast during that time. Together, these conditions could lead to the rapid spread of fires.
