Flash Flood Warning issued August 2 at 2:52AM EDT until August 2 at 4:30AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA
Event:
Flash Flood Warning
Urgency:
Immediate
Effective:
August 1, 2026 - 11:52pm
Expires:
August 2, 2026 - 1:30am
Description:
At 252 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicates heavy rain has exited the
warned area this morning. However, thunderstorms earlier this
evening produced between 3.5 and locally 6.5 inches of rain across
portions of Carroll, Patrick and Floyd Counties. Runoff from this
rain continues to collect in area creeks and rivers, causing them to
rise rapidly. Many roads remain flooded and impassible due to
flooding, or flooding related debris covering the roads. This is a
dangerous situation as some roads remain flooded this morning, with
the potential that motorists may unknowingly drive into deep flood
waters, not realizing the flooding is there due to the darkness.
HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.
SOURCE...Radar.
IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas,
highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor
drainage and low-lying areas.
Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Mount Airy... Flat Rock...
Hillsville... Dobson...
Stuart... Floyd...
Willis...
This includes the following streams and drainages...
Big Indian Creek, Beaver Creek, Beaverdam Creek, Anglin Branch,
Archies Creek and Ararat River.
Instruction:
Because of the potential for flooded roads, people are advised to
avoid all travel unless absolutely necessary. If you must travel,
make sure somebody knows were you are going, and the route you plan
to take to your destination. If you encounter a flooded road, turn
around. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious
at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of flooding,
including mudslides or flooded roads, to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free at 1...8 6 6...2 1 5...4 3 2 4. Reports
and pictures can also be shared on the National Weather Service
Blacksburg Facebook page and on X.
