Description:
At 1126 PM MDT, a river gauge on the Chinle Creek in Canyon de Chelly
National Monument reported that the water levels have now fallen
below flood stage, however downstream impacts will continue. Between
0.75 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is already
occurring.
HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing
flash flooding.
SOURCE...River gauge reported.
IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, and
normally dry washes.
For Chinle Creek at Chinle:
At 1100 PM MDT the stage was 3.54 feet and falling.
Flood Stage is 4.0 feet.
Impacts:
At 3.6 feet: Chinle Creek becomes impassable to recreational
vehicles.
At 4.0 feet: Water begins to encroach upon structures just upstream
of the Highway 64 bridge near the Canyon de Chelly welcome center.

Cottonwood Campground, Tsegi Overlook, Junction Overlook, White House

This includes the following creeks, washes and rivers...
Black Rock Canyon, Nazlini Wash, Chinle Wash, Coyote Wash, Tiis
Ndiitsooi Wash, Muerto, Canyon del, Sheep Dip Creek and Agua Sal
Creek.
Instruction:
Flooding of washes and creeks will occur, some dirt roads will become
muddy and impassable. Paved roads and underpasses could become
flooded as well.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.
Low water crossings will become dangerous in heavy rain. Do not
attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.
