...Forecast flooding changed from Minor to Moderate severity and increased in duration for the following rivers in Michigan... Sturgeon River near Alston affecting Baraga and Houghton Counties. .Heavy rain will fall on a deep primed snowpack leading to the melt increasing. Flows in rivers will increase quickly and reach critical levels. * WHAT...Minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast. This approaches the flood of record. * WHERE...Sturgeon River near Alston. * WHEN...Until Wednesday, April 22. * IMPACTS...At 11.0 feet, Additional homes and structures near the river are impacted and evacuations may be necessary. Water levels may reach the bottom of Froberg bridge in addition to other bridges that cross the river * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 12:30 PM EDT Wednesday the stage was 8.5 feet. - Bankfull stage is 7.5 feet. - Recent Activity...The maximum river stage in the 24 hours ending at 12:30 PM EDT Wednesday was 8.6 feet. - Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 12.3 feet Saturday evening. It will then fall below flood stage Tuesday morning. - Flood stage is 8.0 feet. - Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of 11.9 feet on 04/18/2002. - www.weather.gov/safety/flood
