Description:
Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) continues to organize north-northwest of Chuuk. Sinlaku is starting to slowly move northward and will start to move northwest and towards the Marianas as it increases in forward speed. TY Sinlaku is expected to strengthen as it approaches the Marianas, possibly crossing Guam as a category 3 or 4 typhoon. While small adjustments in the forecast track are to be expected, overall guidance continues to support passage near Guam. A Typhoon Watch is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan, for the possibility of Typhoon conditions with on the onset of damaging wind within 48 hours. A breezy, but relatively dry trade-wind pattern are still in place this evening, but as TY Sinlaku closes in, winds are expected to increase with conditions deteriorating late Sunday. The Marianas should make preparations for the potential for Tropical Storm to Typhoon force winds, with the most likely time of Tropical Storm-force winds Monday evening. For the Far Northern Mariana Islands, breezy and choppy sea conditions are expected late this weekend and into early next week, with potential for Tropical Storm-force winds around Tuesday night. There is the potential for 15 to 20 inches of rainfall between Sunday night and Wednesday, especially near the center of TY Sinlaku. Given the current forecast track, this potential is highest for Guam and Rota, with 8 to 15 inches possible for Tinian and Saipan. However, a shift in the forecast track could shift the area of heaviest rainfall. Widespread showers, torrential rain and scattered thunderstorms are expected as Sinlaku moves through the Marianas late Monday through Wednesday morning. For further updates, see the Typhoon Local Statement issued by the National Weather Service Guam under WMO header WTPQ81.
