Rip Current Statement
Urgency:
Expected
Effective:
May 9, 2026 - 10:39am
Expires:
May 10, 2026 - 12:45am
Description:
* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...East facing reefs of the Marianas. * WHEN...Through Monday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Elevated trade swell, generated by a trade- wind surge caused by the pressure gradient between the subtropical ridge to the north and the unsettled pattern over western and central Micronesia, is producing a high risk of rip currents along east facing reefs. Trade swell and east-facing surf will be slow to diminish as Hagupit moves away, and the High Rip Current Risk was extended.
Instruction:
Rip currents will be life threatening. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
