Description:
At 740 PM HST, radar indicated heavy rain over the western Kona
slopes of the Big Island. A large heavy rain band is moving into the
Kona slopes and heavy rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches
per hour. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
HAZARD...Heavy rain producing life threatening flash flooding.
SOURCE...Radar.
IMPACT...Significant and life threatening flooding in drainages,
streams, rivers, roads, properties, and other low lying
areas. Multiple public road closures expected, as well
as landslides in steep terrain.
Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Kealakekua, Kainaliu, Honaunau, Honalo,
Kahaluu-Keauhou, Holualoa, Kalaoa, Pohakuloa Training Area, Kona
International Airport, Milolii and Hawaii Volcanoes Park Kahuku
Unit.
Instruction:
Stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even
if they are currently dry.
Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on
foot. Turn around, don't drown.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.
